Ann Tyler's book uses disturbing photos and quotes to take readers on an uncomfortable journey. As you flip through, you can mix and match parts of people, chickens, and dogs with quotes about shooting animals and tin cans. In the end, you discover that these are pictures of two women who Robert Acremant murdered because they were dating. The quotes show how he dehumanizes them by comparing them to sick animals and inanimate objects.
